Small Business Grants: Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about how small business grants work, who qualifies, and how to apply.
What is a small business grant?
A small business grant is funding awarded to a business that does not need to be repaid. Grants are typically funded by federal agencies, state governments, foundations, or corporations to support specific outcomes such as job creation, technology innovation, rural development, or support for women, minority, and veteran entrepreneurs. Unlike loans, grants do not require repayment, do not charge interest, and do not require giving up equity in your business.
Do you have to pay back grants?
In almost all cases, no. Grants are gift money you keep. Exceptions: Pell Grants must be partially repaid if you withdraw from school before completing 60% of the term, performance-based grants may be clawed back if you fail to meet milestones, and forgivable loans (which look like grants) become repayable if you do not meet forgiveness conditions. See our complete guide on whether you have to pay back grants for full details.
Where can I find small business grants?
Open Grant Data tracks every active small business grant in the United States — federal, state, foundation, and corporate — and lists them in one searchable, free directory. Browse our grant database by state, industry, demographic (women, veterans, minorities, startups), or keyword. We update the directory weekly with newly opened grants and closing dates.
How do I apply for a small business grant?
Most grants require a written application that covers your business description, problem you solve, use of funds, expected outcomes, team qualifications, and budget. Applications typically take 8–250+ hours depending on grant size. Free help is available through Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs), SCORE mentors, Women's Business Centers, and MBDA Centers. See our grant writing guide for the complete framework.
Are small business grants only for established businesses?
No. Many grants specifically fund pre-revenue startups, including SBIR Phase I federal grants ($150K–$275K), Amber Grant for Women, NASE Growth Grant, Verizon Digital Ready, and Hello Alice rounds. Pre-revenue founders should focus on microgrants ($1,000–$25,000), pitch competitions, and federal R&D programs. Our pre-revenue startup grants guide covers every option.
